While plastic bags are convenient and have become a part of our lives for a long time, they pose a significant problem for the environment. Commercial contract cleaners, facility managers and domestic households can make a large difference to improve the environment when switching to compostable plastic bags.
Why Are Plastic Bags Bad for The Environment?
Plastic bags and bin liners are one of the most common types of litter and build-ups of plastic bags have a myriad of effects including the death of over 100,000 marine animals and a million of seabirds from consumption annually. Plastic production and incineration could be responsible for over 56 gigatons of carbon between now and 2050. And annual CO2 emissions from plastics could grow to be more than 2.75 billion tonnes every year. (Joyce, C). Plastic bags take up to 500 or more years to degrade in landfills but do not completely degrade but rather become microplastics that continue to pollute the environment and enter our food supply (biologicaldiversity.org)
What Is the Plastic Bag Ban?
With the long-term environmental impacts of plastic bags becoming more known, government bodies and environmental groups are looking to ban single-use plastics such as plastic bags.
For example, Western Australia will start banning single-use plastics within 3 years (2020 – 2023). This ban will include plastic plates, cutlery, food containers and plastic bags.
Many critics of the plastic bag ban are mostly concerned with the paper bag alternative. Which would involve the culling of trees requiring a lot of water, chemicals, fuel and heavy machinery which all still impacts the environment.
So, what’s the solution?
Compostable Bags are the Solution!
Biodegradable and compostable materials can often be confused with each other but there’s a couple of differences. For example, compostable products take less time to degrade and can actually provide nutrients to the earth when broken down. Biodegradable products will take around 3-6 months depending on the product size and density to break down however they are both a fantastic option for environmentally friendly bags/ packaging.
Benefits of Compostable Packaging:
When patrons or customers enter your facility whether it be a small business, gym, large office or even in the hospitality industry, it’s always appreciated when they see that your facility is environmentally conscious. Dotcom Distribution says that as many as 61% of consumers consider green packaging when deciding where to shop. Likewise advertising your facility operating with environmentally conscious practices is another great way to bring in more patrons who are willing to support eco-friendly facilities.
By removing organic waste and beginning your own commercial organics recycling program, you can dramatically reduce monthly waste management.
