Washrooms are known to be the breeding ground of many viruses and bacteria. Due to this nature, it is essential that they are regularly cleaned and disinfected to protect users’ health and company image.
However, determining how often your workplace washroom should be cleaned will be dependent on the number of staff, the size of your facility and the foot traffic.
It may not seem important but a clean washroom in a workplace is highly valuable to employees, visitors, and clients. When people use the washroom, the cleanliness reflects the business brand. A survey conducted by Cintas Corporation found that 94% of people wouldn’t conduct business with people again if they had a dirty washroom, this shows the impact of a clean bathroom and that it is essential to always keep it clean.
The number of staff that use your facility will determine how often it should be cleaned. If your building has multiple companies within it, there will be higher foot traffic, and this means your washrooms are being used more frequently and will get dirtier quicker. For higher foot traffic, it is recommended that they are cleaned up to 10 times a day to ensure germs and bacteria are sufficiently being removed. In comparison to a company that is smaller, there will be fewer employees which means less foot traffic and the need to clean is less frequent. A small to the mid-size facility will only require only up to two cleans per day.
A survey of 100,000 people found that 62% of men and 40% of women don’t wash their hands after using the toilet. When users don’t wash their hands means it means more of a higher chance of high-touch surfaces to housing more bacteria. Germs and bacteria will stay on these surfaces for hours and will continue to multiply after each use which is why it is important for frequent cleaning to minimise bacteria and viruses from growing any further.
Disinfection vs. Cleaning
The most important part of a cleaning routine is the disinfection process but what is disinfecting? Disinfecting uses chemical solutions tailored to kill germs, viruses, and bacteria. However, before disinfection, you must clean the surface to prepare it for disinfection. Cleaning involves the act of removing any dirt, dust, or grime on the surface.
No surface is truly cleaned unless disinfected. The surface may visibly look cleaned but if not disinfected after the cleaning process, germs and bacteria can still live on the surface and therefore still spread. With about 200 million bacteria per square inch on each hand after you visit the average bathroom, it is essential that the disinfection process is implemented into the cleaner’s routine.
The most frequently touched surfaces in washrooms include, faucet handles, flush handles/buttons, door handles, hand dryers and towel dispensers, these are areas that cleaners should prioritise disinfecting regularly.
