The great dilemma of the cleaning industry is whether paper towels or hand air dryers should be used in our washrooms?
Let’s be honest, in that few short minutes that we ‘just quickly run to the toilet’, most people don’t think about how they will dry their hands after washing them because if our hands are dry the moment walking out of the bathroom, we are hygienic right? Wrong.
Study of Air Dryers
A study of Air Dryers, by researchers at the University of Connecticut and Quinnipiac University, concluded the below facts:
- The surface of our hands exposed to bathroom air for two minutes with the hand dryers off only grew one colony of bacteria, or none.
- However, when exposed to hot air from a hand dryer for 30 seconds, they grew up to 254 colonies of bacteria.
- The use of paper towels reduces bacteria on the hands by up to 77%
Why are air dryers still being used in washrooms?
Why are hand air dryers still being put into washrooms if they produce more bacteria than good? Contract cleaners will usually install air dryers, reducing ongoing costs and maintenance.
Why choose the more hygienic hand towel, over the hand air dryer?
This question has already been answered by the public, as a survey concluded that of 500 people of the general public 70% of agreeing “They wish more facilities offered paper hand towels as an alternative to air dryers”
When considered, the hygienic effectiveness of the hand-drying method is not only the percentage of dryness of the hands but also the removal of bacteria from washed hands and the prevention of cross-contamination.
The use of single-use, disposable paper towels has been proven to be much more of a hygienic solution to hand drying across the industry as the spread of contagious diseases, has become a huge priority.
